TVB 48th Anniversary Awards Fashion Critique

This is much belated, but we are back with our fashion critique of this year's anniversary awards! From some beautiful ladies to some horrible fashion flubs and many things in between, this year's red carpet had them all. But first, Iris pens an open letter to all male TVB actors:

Dear gentlemen,

How hard is it leave the house and come to an awards show without making a fool of yourself? There is considerably less opportunity for you all to mess up, and yet almost all of you find a way anyway. You and your stylists need to get it together.

With love,
Iris

Beauties of the Night

Iris: I’m not personally in love with it, but Nancy definitely looks well-put together and like a TV Queen with the clean up do and sparkling bodycon dress. The skirt of the dress is also much more attractive in action as you can see it change colors in the light.

Niki: I love the shape of Nancy’s dress, it’s dramatic without being over-the-top but I wish it would have been a different color besides grey. I do agree with Iris on the fact that out of everyone, Nancy has the most put together look of the night. She balanced the glamorous dress out well with a simple yet elegant hairdo and makeup.

Iris: With the revealing back and delicate white lace, Natalie’s look was a very nice mix of sexy but elegant and feminine, which is pretty hard to come by at these award shows. The ponytail is a little casual, but I think it still fits with the lightness and flowiness of her dress.

Niki: Natalie owned it this dress, she looks classy, sexy, and elegant all rolled into one. The bold red lip gave the look that necessary pop of color. Without it, she may have been washed out.

Iris: Kristal is full of character, and this dress shows it even though it’s not something I’d personally wear. The pointy cut of the top of her dress could have easily looked awkward on another actress, but it shows off Kristal as the headstrong and confident woman she is. Her jewelry also matched very well.

Niki: Kristal’s dress isn’t my favorite, and the flower embellishments and white side panels look awkward to me but I do like the color. Even though it’s not my personal taste, the dress does fit very well with Kristal’s edgy and quirky personality.

Iris: Rounding out my favorite looks of the night was surprisingly Katy Kung’s. This dress makes Katy look youthful without making her look prom-ready (ahem Linda and Eliza). I love the paneling of the top and the floral pattern. I could have done without the flowers on the skirt though.

NIki: If I had to choose any dress from this year’s line up to wear (not that I can afford any of them), I would choose Katy’s. The floral paneling on top is just gorgeous and the sheer material gives it that hint of sexiness which prevents the look from being too juvenile.

They tried, sorta

Iris: Grace seems to have an affinity for ball gowns, which is unfortunate as these types of dresses overwhelm her small frame. I was not a fan of the scrunching of the top.

Ruco finally picks an appropriate outfit despite his usually strange fashion decisions. I’m not a fan of suede, but it’s not overkill with this jacket and it fits his build very well, making him look the most clean-cut of the males. And now to Niki for a rant on thin girls and ball gowns...

Niki: The messy ruching and stiff material makes the dress bunch up awkwardly instead of flow, making the entire look feel messy. These types of heavy fabric tend to overwhelm people who have small thin frames, like Grace, because it will add unnecessary volume which makes it look like the dress is wearing the person instead of the other way around. The overall shape of Grace’s dress isn’t bad, however, since the drop waist does hug her figure more so she doesn’t look completely swallowed and the color is quite nice against her skin tone. The only thing that really bothers me is the god awful ruching on her chest. If anything it makes her look even flatter because all you see is a mass of fabric.

Like Iris, I’m also not a fan of suede, but it works with the deep purple color of Ruco’s jacket. My favorite part of his outfit has to be the blazer neckline. The deep V and thick collar isn’t something you see often but it makes a bold statement and is a nice change of pace.

Iris: Tavia, as usual, chooses the boring and safe route with another black dress. However, I actually like this dress more than some of her other recent choices as the lace makes it subtly sexy. Her hair though, once again ages her.

Louis was one of the few actors to wear a classic tuxedo, which made the trendy actor look kinda boring, but at least he didn’t make a fool of himself! Louis Cheung is synonymous to me with that mustache now, but I hope he ditches the goatee soon.

Niki: I’m a sucker for a good lace design, so I really like Tavia’s dress. The nude lining makes the black pop more giving her a bit of sex appeal and the shape also hugs her body quite well.

Louis looks very polished and put together (minus the goatee), but it’s also very common look so there’s not much else you can say about it.

Iris: I actually do love the design of Mandy’s dress, which seems to go as sexy as possible without going overboard. What stops me from loving the look is the dark teal, which makes Mandy look more mature than she is. This dress would’ve looked stunning in a brighter shade.

Niki: What Iris said. Haha. The built and details of the dress is beautiful but the color does age her.

Iris: This picture is rather deceiving because Elaine’s side profile here makes the dress seem like it compliments her body more than it looked during the awards show itself. Some low-cut dresses can actually look better on small-chested ladies than well-endowed ones, but this one did absolutely no favors for Elaine. My least favorite part though was the greasy hair which came from using too much hair product. Why does anyone show up to an awards show with such greasy hair?

Niki: At first glance, I was really taken with Elaine’s look. I thought it was a very sleek look with the simple black dress and statement necklace, but upon closer inspection I was also turned off by the look. The back of the dress is unnecessarily low cut, especially considering how low the neckline is, and the sparkly chains going across it is borderline tacky.

Iris: Tony also went the classic route, but I much preferred the navy blue suit he wore at the Starhub awards in Singapore.

Rosina Lam’s dress would have been completely boring if it weren’t for the snake that goes around it, which was actually pretty creepy. The gold does pair well with the white and a regular gold swirl would have gotten the job done. She does look sophisticated without looking aged though.

Niki: I honestly don’t see a difference between Tony and Louis’ looks, but he does look nice. Better safe than sorry I suppose.

Some tailoring would’ve helped Rosina, since the dress just looks like it’s hanging on her frame and doesn’t have much shape.

Iris: Priscilla’s dress can best be described as mediocre yet a little awkward. Pictures don’t make this very apparent, but during the awards show, the top of the dress looked like it was just a flat and structured piece of fabric that was wearing her instead of the other way around.

Niki: To me, Priscilla looks like a mash up of two characters from The Little Mermaid. From the shoulder up she could be Ariel with her sweet smile and simple yet cute hairstyle, but the shape of her dress reminds me of Ursula the sea witch (maybe I’m being a little harsh). It’s no where near being the worst dress of the night, but like Iris said, it’s a little awkward.

Iris: And once again, Eliza looks prom-ready! This time, she went with an old-Hollywood type hairstyle, which amusingly enough, manages to balance out her youthful and baby faced look without making her look too old. I was convinced at first this was the same dress Linda had worn a couple years back, but upon closer inspection, it was actually just similar. Yay for TVB not being THAT cheap!

Niki: This dress makes Eliza look a little plumper than she actually is, which is a little amusing to me for some reason. The train in the back is a bit too long, it would’ve more appropriate if the hem was evenly cut all around, but overall it’s a nice dress.

Iris: Vincent’s sparkly jacket is fun without being too silly. However, it fits him poorly which makes him look more casual. Jacqueline’s red dress is festive but nothing to shout about, and was cut a bit too low for comfort. She has such an infectious and adorable smile though!

Iris: This marks how many times Sharon has worn white now since her wedding? The dress is alright, but Sharon should have opted for a different hairstyle as the side swept hair covers the eye-catching necklace.

Niki: I’ll just comment on Oscar since Iris has said all that needs to be said about the other three people. I love how Oscar decided to mix and match prints. The polka dot blazer injected a little bit of playfulness which matches his personality well and the black and white dress shirt provided a bold contrast for the eyes. His choice of prints made his look eye catching while the decision to stay with dark colors kept him from looking gaudy. His pants, on the other hand, looks a little frumpy and could be tailored better.

Iris: Selena’s dress looks like they were made up of two beautiful dresses that were sewn together to make one bad one. The skirt is a gorgeous pink ombre, and the top detailed (though way too feathery for my taste), but I can’t get over the awkward waist where the two meet. Edwin...just looks tacky.

Niki: I love Selena, but yikes that dress...The awkward transition aside, her torso almost looks nonexistent because of that ridiculously high waistline.

Looking at Edwin makes me feel itchy, because it reminds me of those tweed jackets grandpas wear.

Niki: Gold is a nice color on Stephanie, but unfortunately the ribbed corset mini dress looks cheap at best. It would’ve help if the bottom was fuller, but the single layer of tulle just makes the dress look choppy. I do like how she chose to kept her hair and makeup nice and simple though.

Iris: Stephanie’s dress would have been much improved if the top was just a regular strapless style top and not a ribbed corset. The dress indeed looks choppy and the high low design would have worked much better without the single layer of tulle.

"I know I'm not winning tonight, so I'll wear whatever the hell I want"

Niki: The floral embroidery on the sheer white fabric of Alice’s dress is gorgeous, but it is on the more mature side while the slit on the top is a little too low for comfort. Her necklace is also unnecessarily clunky, and just looks overwhelming on her neck.

Iris: Alice has a curvy figure, which kept her from drowning in this dress. It has a nice pattern like Nhi said, but it is unfitting for an evening dress. Her hair is also too messy. Overall, it’s a disappointing look for someone with such a killer figure.

Niki: Sisley should have just saved time and come wrapped in a comforter, because it would’ve looked the same as her dress...The problem this time lies in the way the dress is structured. Somehow it managed to add weight to her waist and hips making her look awkwardly bulky yet the dress itself looks droopy. To add to that, the dense yellow floral pattern looks like it belongs on a curtain in the 90’s and Sisley’s pulled back bob only ages her more.

As for Him, I’m just glad he decided to scale back from the blinding outfit he had on last year….

Iris: Please. Stop. With. These. Comforter. Dresses. The pattern could have made for a fun and more casual look, but the bulky structure just makes Sisley look awkward instead.

Niki: First of all, I have to say I love Jeannie’s make up. The orange lipstick gives her a pop of color that highlights her whole face and she balanced it out nicely by keeping everything else clean and simple. I would have liked her dress better if she had worn a black mini dress underneath instead of the two piece, but the design of the top layer is pretty cool. She definitely looks more mature here, but in a badass kind of way.

Iris: The design of the dress is a bit too mature for the youthful Jeannie, especially coupled with the slicked back hair. It is similar to Linda’s dress, which I will get into below, but what makes this 100 times better is that Jeannie looks confident and comfortable. A mini dress would have looked better underneath, but the bandeau and bottom was much better than Linda’s bikini and bottom combo.

Fashion flubs

Iris: I present to you… Linda and her new butler.

Niki: No kidding...every time I look at Kenneth I think he’s carrying towels…but then I realize it’s just his coat being bipolar.

Linda’s dress is just tacky to me, from the mesh material to whatever it is she has underneath...She had a similar style to Jeannie’s dress this year, but what sets them apart was the fact that Jeannie really owned what she wore instead of looking so awkward.

Iris: Niki took the words out of my mouth. Linda looked incredibly uncomfortable during the entire awards show, as if finally realizing all the eyes on her and regretting what she was wearing. Just looking at her made me feel uncomfortable. She was shown wearing a thick wrap later on in the night. Jeannie was sexy, but Linda was the tacky try-hard. Also, what's with the metallic hair?

Iris: Niki told me at 1 in the morning that Vivien’s dress looked like the designers went out and skinned a swan. Suffice it to say, I was very disturbed, but I can't say that I don't concur.

Niki: I still can’t shake that imagery of Vivien’s dress, so I thought I might as well share it with you Iris. What are friends for if we can’t suffer together. :) Besides the overkill with the dress (no pun intended), I wish she would’ve just chosen one piece of jewelry because the necklace, and the earrings, AND the bracelet is way too much.

Niki: Joel looks really nice...from the waist up. But hey, at least he wore dress shoes.

Iris: When I saw him sitting down, I thought “Oh, Joel looks pretty good.” And then I saw this picture. The skirt is awkward, but at least the outfit looks put-together. Ultimately what bothers me most about this outfit is the fact that I see Joel’s calves. No calves should be exposed at such a formal event.

Niki: Rebecca looks like she’s filming a “Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles” sequel with this look, but all I can really see are her boobs. Unlike Grace and Sisley, this dress is a little too form fitting and I’d like to see a little less of her figure.

Matt would look quite nice if he didn’t skip his fittings. This suit looks like a size or two too big. Why so droopy Matt?

Iris: The cleavage screams “I’m young and vibrant,” and then the hair and gold pattern on her dress screams “grandma.” Talk about a walking contradiction. Matt’s pants just make me sad.

Niki: Honestly, how hard is it to properly tailor a suit? Why must everyone show up looking so baggy...

Iris: Hugo Wong is an incredibly attractive guy, but his level of attractiveness just plummeted in this awkward get up. From what I can see of his pants, he looks like they’re drowning in them. The length and fabric of his jacket looks like he’s about to take part in a circus and perform a final trick with his lion.

Grace’s dress can only offend so much while standing next to Hugo in that, but it’s certainly not appealing either, particularly the awkward black part of the top.

Iris: There was absolutely nothing in Moses’ outfit that was good. The color is cheesy and blinding, his hair is goofy, and he’s wearing sneakers. And because he apparently didn’t think he committed enough fashion crimes, he threw on that scarf too.

Niki: I'm just going to chalk this up to having two kids under 2 and a baby on the way frying his brain, because there's no other reason to explain why anyone would agree to wear something like this...

Best Dressed Female: Nancy Wu

Iris: Nancy looks most put-together and absolutely dazzling in that dress. Niki and I went back to read our fashion post from last year, and it turns out this is the second year in a row we have chosen her as our best dressed female. Keep making good fashion choices Nancy!

Niki: Nancy has a very elegant fashion sense, but most importantly she knows how to balance the glamorous with the simple, so she ends up looking the most put together.

Personal Favorites

Iris: I personally liked Natalie’s overall look most. She managed to look sexy, classy, and elegant all at the same time.

Niki: Natalie is definitely one of my top choices, but Katy's dress has to be my favorite just because it fits my personal style more.

Best Dressed Male: Ruco Chan

Iris: As much as I love Ruco, I’d never thought I’d be giving him a best dressed title. He looked very handsome and was one of the only guys to avoid the safe route without going crazy and bizarre in the process. His suit was also fitted the best. Someone remembered to go to the tailor!

Niki: Once again, Iris and I can't seem to disagree, but let's be honest the rest of the guys didn't put up much of a fight.

Worst Dressed: Moses Chan

Iris: No need to split this up by gender. Moses got nothing right.

Niki: Who could argue with this? Moses just wins hands down.

TVB 48th Anniversary Awards: Red Carpet Fashion Critique

Another anniversary awards season has come to an end, and while the winners were all very deserving and satisfying, the fashion left much to be desired… We throw in all the comments, quips, and sarcastic remarks we have regarding the fashion at this year’s awards show.

Iris: As the obvious TV King and Queen of the night, Roger and Charmaine were dressed to make an impression. Charmaine looked like she had stolen something straight from Ingrid, the Snow Queen’s closet from “Once Upon a Time.” From the shoulders down it looks okay, but the collar looks like it's eating Char's neck and going for her head.

Roger looked so confident he was going to win, he ditched a tie for a crown ornament. The children on his jacket, which are supposed to represent his son and daughter, are sweet and meaningful. However, had I seen him in person, I'm pretty sure I would've been left blinded by all the white. "MY EYES!"

Niki: Every time I look at Charmaine’s picture I have trouble seeing her as a whole person simply because that collar is so distracting. Her head seems to just be floating in mid air and then an inch down is the rest of her body. The only thing I really like about this dress is the sheer waist that managed to hug her curves and prevented her from looking like a complete stick.

As for Roger, I think he looks quite dashing in the all white outfit, but Iris is right, had I seen him in person I probably would've had to put on sunglasses. The details on his jacket is definitely a sweet sentiment and I’m sure his kids would love it when they see their dad accepting his award with them in mind. I actually love his crown ornament in the pictures he took without his jacket. It gave the eyes something to focus on in an all white ensemble and it’s definitely a fun accessory piece. However, with the jacket on it felt like there was too much going on. No matter how you look at it, these two definitely took the spotlight in this year’s award show.

Iris: These two look strange standing next to each other in their vastly contrasting looks. Linda's simple updo hairstyle and gold headband and earrings are perfect. Her hair, makeup, and accessories make her look absolutely gorgeous, but I'm indifferent to the dress. A bit too princessy to me, but I'm glad Linda isn't trying to pull anything too weird anymore (Remember this disaster?)

Despite the full cameo... This is the least weird and eye-opening look I've seen from Bosco at an awards show in a while.

Niki: I think I’ll call this one “The Princess and her Bodyguard”. Does it not look like it?
I also think that Linda did an amazing job choosing her accessories and makeup. It was a simple but elegant look, which fits her perfectly. I don’t have anything to say about her dress, except for the fact that she looked like she was performing in a ballet more than attending an award show.
Even though I’ve only seen a couple of award show pictures, I can tell that this was a safe outfit for Bosco.

Iris: Plaid, plaid, and...yep, more plaid. And somewhere under all that plaid is Him. At the least, he is clearly shown to be wearing a jacket and not looking like a Scottish red bird like Ron last year.

I'm a bit surprised by Kate this year... The whole look is so simplistic. The dress is boring and basic, but I guess she wasn't trying to get attention this year. Glad she has stopped slicking her hair back though. The updo and jewelry are still nice.

Niki: My eyes actually dilated when I first saw Him’s outfit. It was so glaring that I didn’t even see who it was at first, all I saw was a patch of plaid. If I stare at it long enough I’m sure I’ll manage to somehow hypnotize myself. (I could go on, but I’ll stop here)

Kate kept it very simple and safe this year, which isn’t an entirely bad thing. While the dress is on the boring side, I do like her choice of jewelry.

Iris: Leave it to Kristal to go for the edgier look. I like the contrasting black and white and train of the dress, but don't dig the leggings/pants underneath. It's just too much for me, but I love how she's not afraid to be more bold and different.

Niki: Kristal really rocks this punk and edgy style, she definitely gets points for thinking outside the box. From the waist up I wouldn’t change a thing, but the sudden cut out in the front is awkward at best.

Iris: I didn't get as good of a look while watching the anniversary awards, and thought Eliza's dress looked quite nice. But when looking at actual pictures, the print of the dress looks like she took her comforter to a designer's office to have converted into a dress. I'm not sure if the comforter look or her usual prom look is better.

Niki: Iris basically stole what I was going to say. From the pictures I’ve seen from her it looks like she’s either dressed for prom or she’s drowning in her dress (sometimes a mixture of both). The material also seems to be on the thicker side, coupled with the ballgown cut it only adds more weight to her small frame.

Niki: Vincent looks so warm and cozy in his navy trench coat that I can’t help but love it. He carried this look well, considering it could’ve ended up making him look skinny and bean pole-ish given his height. Even though I can’t say that it’s a vintage look, something about it does remind me of the 1950’s.
Josie looked like she was dressed to go to the club instead of an award show. Her makeup was too dark and heavy and the dress is a bit too short for this occasion.

Iris: I agree with Niki on both counts. Vincent pulls off the trench coat, making it a nice change from the classic suits and outrageous outfits the men usually go with. Meanwhile, Josie just looks totally inappropriate for an awards show.

Niki: If you look really closely this is a very nice dress, but sadly on Natalie it blends a little too well with her skin tone making difficult to see the dress’ details. The other unfortunate issue is that the vertical patterns on the dress makes Natalie look even skinnier than she already is.

Iris: The gold color should have been either a darker or bolder color, but instead makes Natalie look washed out. The dress indeed has nice detailing, but does not do anything to accentuate her very thin figure.

Niki: Nancy looks sharp and fierce this year in her shiny silver dress. My favorite part of her look has to be how the tiny silver plates reflect the light. The deep slits on the side create a sexy feel without being too revealing and black belt cinches her waist nicely and prevented the dress from looking too baggy. The coral lipstick was also a nice makeup choice as it was a refreshing look and it gave her a splash of color that highlighted her face very well.

I think a suede suit, particularly in this purple/blue combination, would bug me if it was on anyone else besides Raymond, but somehow he makes it work. To me, he’s very charming and adorkable, as always, with this clean cut look.

Iris: Nancy definitely looked sharp in this dress and was able to show some skin without going overboard. After seeing her sport an eye-popping orange dress earlier, it's nice to see her exhibit some boldness in a different way. With the coral lipstick, this is a relatively simple but eyecatching look. As usual, Raymond goes the more dorky but still cute route. I agree I probably would not like suede on another guy, but he has a way of pulling it off.

Iris: "My name is Tony, I am zhe French paint-uh" is basically what he's saying with this get up. I'm going to guess Priscilla laughed at him for about 5 minutes straight when she first saw him. Not a good look for Tony... but I guess with his shaved head and mustache right now (for the filming of "Cheung Po Jai"), avoiding looking silly would be hard. Priscilla's dress looks more flattering from the side and back than the front, but overall the dress isn't too bad and quite sweet looking while her side swept hair is a nice and attractive change. Still, these two and their playful friendship never fail to make me smile.

Niki: Maybe he recognized that there was no getting away from looking ridiculous with that mustache and haircut so he decided to go with it ;D. Priscilla looked clean and sweet in her dress and I quite like her hair pulled to the side this way. Not to mention that this has got to be my favorite picture out of all of them, these two are just too adorable together (in a completely platonic way of course).

Iris: Tavia always plays it safe, and this year was not an exception. However, it is an improvement as the dress hugs her curves to give her a more flattering figure. Her dresses and overall looks are always on the mature side though. While I don't want her to go all prom queen on me, I would like her to try something more youthful. As for Ruco, I just hope his hair grows back soon. Hats can be appropriate for awards shows, but this was playing it too casual. And for the nth time, I wish he wouldn't wear those dorky glasses to hide his handsome face.

Niki: The lace details on Tavia’s dress is just amazing and she’s definitely benefiting from the silhouette of the dress. Even though it does make her look more mature, I would say that this is one of the times where she does look more youthful because the dress played with her curves so well. I agree, Ruco’s look was a bit too casual this year. I think that was mainly because of the beanie, if it had been any other hat then it wouldn’t have been as bad.

Sharon.jpg

Iris: Sharon, I'm happy that you got married this year, but please stop wearing wedding-inspired dresses to award shows and events. Every dress she has worn since becoming a Mrs. has screamed that she's still in the wedding mood. At the least, the influence is not as seen here as it was for the gala and Starhub Awards. High low dresses can be fun and different, but for Sharon, it's gotten boring. Sammy is a pretty good looking guy, but kind of looks like a grandpa here, mostly due to the jacket

Niki: Getting married is a wonderful thing, wanting to share your happiness is also great, but after a while it just feels like you’re rubbing it in the faces of single people. Sharon, you look nice, but stop it. Sammy’s look may not be the most stylish, but I actually think it’s kind of cute, in a dorky hipster kind of way.

Iris: I like the lilac color of Mandy's dress, but with its simplistic cutting, there's nothing to go "wow" about. It looks like Oscar decided to compensate for Mandy because there is a bit too much going on in that suit.

Niki: I think Mandy’s dress would’ve been more flattering if the waistline had been just a little bit lower, but the color does look very nice on her and the overall look as a romantic feel to it. The prints on Oscar’s suit reminds me of the decorations in the castle in “Beauty and the Beast”. It’s outfits like these that make me wonder whether I should blame the designer or the buyer more.

Iris: The silk duo? Ben is able to mostly pull it off (still too creme-colored looking for me though) since he paired it with black pants, but Maggie's black silk shirt and pants made it look like she was wearing her pajamas. Throwing on the fur coat and vintage hairstyle just made the look more strange.

Niki: “The silk duo”, just what I was going to say. The black pants definitely helped Ben’s look, but I just personally cannot stand the creme-colored jacket. The vintage hairstyle complemented Maggie just fine, it looks great on her actually. I think she had the potential to look amazing if she had chosen something different to wear. The high-waisted crinkly black pants were horrible and the fur coat is just confusing to me.

Becky.jpg

Iris: I think this kind of top style is sweet and a nice change from the usual sleeveless, but Becky's dress would have worked a lot better with a scoop neckline or at least a regular v-neckline instead of this widely spread apart one. Her hair doesn't look bad either but the clip makes her look a little more childish.

Niki: I think this look is nice and sweet, but it’s also a little bit promy, maybe because of the baby pink color and hair clip.
Leanne.jpg

Iris: Leanne needs to stop wearing lingerie to fancy events. Okay, she's not actually wearing lingerie, but the silk and lace combo sure makes it look like it. While this is a lot more subtle than the shocking dress she wore to last year's gala that left little to the imagination, she should try something else. The cutout below her chest bothers me, and she would have benefited from a silver necklace to match her bracelet.

Niki: Unlike some of the other ladies she should try a thicker fabric next time. I do, however, like the lace details on the side of the dress (maybe I’m just a lace person).

Louisa.jpg

Iris: "And for the first day of Christmas, I want Louisa So..." Wait, what? The print of the dress as well as the design makes Louisa look like a wrapped up Christmas present. Nothing much is wrong with Wayne's simple black suit, but his hair kind of makes me laugh.

Niki: Not only does the dress look like Christmas wrapping paper, but the pattern makes it look like those old fashioned ones. It also made Louisa look bulkier than necessary with the huge pleat on the front. As for Wayne, he looks sleek in his suit and the mini bow tie was a cute touch. But I’m more amused by his expression than anything else.
Samantha_Louis.jpg

Iris: Although Louis sometimes likes more trendy and flamboyant clothes, I'm glad he decided to choose something more classic, and he looks very dapper. Not too simple but not too busy. Samantha always seems to wear a variation of the same deep v-neck dress so this rose-printed strapless one is more modest and actually quite refreshing and flows nicely.

Niki: Can I give Louis the “If looks could kill” award? haha. Louis is probably the best dressed out of all the guys. His look is clean, sharp, and classic without being too simple. Samantha was the only one to pull off a vintage-inspired look this year. Her rose-printed dress gives off a romantic yet fun feel. She made a wise choice to balanced her bold makeup and dress out with the neutral silver necklace.

Niki: Lin Xia Wei had one of my favorite looks this year. The nude underlining highlighted the black lace and tulle, creating a contrast that helped her dress pop, even with the usually neutral colors. The top is well structured, complementing her figure and is intricately adorned with black lace while the bottom transitioned into a softer look. It was one of the few ball gowns that didn’t totally engulf its wearer. Matt’s blue suede suit with leather lining doesn’t look completely horrible on him, but it’s just too much.

Iris: The lace-adorned top of Lin Xia Wei's dress is actually very pretty while still classy and flatters her figure. It's a quite elegant look and despite the neutral colors, she does not look washed out. The suede suit does nothing to help Matt's handsome looks.

Oceane.jpg

Iris: Pastel colors galore! I love the lilac color even more than Mandy's dress and the top part is very pretty, but the train just seems too exaggerated and...fluffy. Pal's pairing of a light yellow jacket and baby blue slacks with sneakers is just wrong in so many ways.

Niki: This is one of those statement dresses that you can’t miss, even from a mile away. Oceane figure looks amazing in this and who knew lilac would be such a complementary color. The only thing I’m wondering is how she was able to walk in that dress. I think Pal went the silly and fun route with his outfit. The only thing I have to say is, it could be a lot worse.

Fashion Awards

Best Dressed

Male: Louis Cheung

Iris: The guy can really pull off a suit. Louis just looks so dashing and was the one guy who hit the right note of simple and classic.

Niki: Simple and classic is the way to go boys. Louis proved that you don’t need wacky gimmicks to stand out from the crowd.

Female: Nancy Wu

Iris: There's not one that I really love, but if I had to choose one I'd pick Nancy. Her look is relatively simple yet so eye catching. However, Linda gets my pick for best hair, make-up, and accessorizing.

Niki: Nancy’s look was bold and sexy, yet it still maintained that classy aura.

Honorable Mentions

Male: Vincent Wong

Iris: Vincent's trench coat was a pretty refreshing choice.

Niki: Vincent managed to make a difficult article of clothing work and achieved a look that’s both stylish and comfy. (I kinda want to borrow his coat, but I would drown in it.)

Female: Samantha Ko, Kristal Tin, Lin Xia Wei

Iris: There are many I quite liked.I really like Samantha's slightly vintage rose-print dress, which shows her figure without going overboard. Kristal's edgy ensemble is another great one if it weren't for the leggings underneath. Lin Xia Wei's was also full of intricate details.

Niki: I love the romantic and vintage feel of Samantha’s dress as well as her bold choice of make-up. Kristal can pull off some of the wildest and daring looks, so I have to give her credit for that. Lin Xia Wei’s dress matches my personal preference the most, which is why it’s one of my favorites. But it was also a pretty typical style of dress and didn’t make as big of an impression as Nancy’s look.

Worst Dressed

Male: Him Law

Too. Much. Plaid. And he almost hypnotized my partner Niki here. I love Tony but he is another bad one, but at the least he's given me a new thing to poke fun at. Oui oui?

Niki: How did Him decide that layering one of the most jarring patterns in the history of mankind was a good idea...My poor eyes...

Female: Josie Ho

Iris: Josie's look was just completely inappropriate for an awards show. She went way overboard with the make up and like Niki said, she really did seem like she was about to go hit a club.

Niki: Perhaps Josie was going for an edgier look, but she just came on a little too strong in the end.

Starhub TVB Awards 2012 - Fa Dan Fashion

On Saturday, August 18, a group of TVB artists attended the Starhub TVB Awards in Singapore.  Many of the awards given and the winners were a joke, with even more "pork" handed out than at the TVB Anniversary Awards.  Instead of wallowing about the results of the trivial awards (but if you must - a list of winners has been included at the bottom), let's take a look at the fashion choices by our lovely fa dan's.

Best dressed definitely goes to Selena, who looked gorgeous in a fitted strapless light aqua dress that trailed on the ground to create a mermaid silhouette.  I love the light aqua color, which gives off a refreshing feeling.  The color, design, fit, and of course, the person wearing the dress was beautiful.  To give it a sleek and subtle yet feminine look, Selena pulled up her hair into a loose updo with her bangs to the side, and accessorized with a silver necklace.

Best dressed male goes to Ruco, and cutest couple is Selena and Ruco.  They looked compatible and very sweet together.  Their ensembles complimented each other with the different calming shades of blue.  Ruco dressed in a dark blue/navy suit with black shirt and bow tie.  Not the typical suit you see worn, but he pulls it off looking handsome as always.  However, I wish he opted to stop wearing those glasses all the time.  Ruco went home with the "Best Newcomer" award...and I seriously wonder if he found the win funny, or just plain sad.

The night's Best Actress Myolie Wu wore a deep purple dress made up of a unique fabric (that I can't name).  The neckline and design of the dress, along with her newly cut short hair, makes her look very sharp and fashionable!

Tavia Yeung's fashion choices for award shows in recent years hasn't been anything I've had anything particularly good to say about, but she looked quite lovely that night.  She looked beautiful in her long flowing butterfly printed dress.  The design of the waist of the dress created dimension and created a small waist shape.  Her hair was appropriately pulled into a pony tail.  Tavia's dress makes her look fresh and sweet, and I liked how it wasn't overly formal.

It seemed blues and purples were very popular with the ladies for this event this year!  Linda always looks ready to be crowned Homecoming or Prom Queen with her gowns.  Basically, she looks beautiful but like a princess from a fairy tale.  Nevertheless, I like the color and detailing of the dress, which compliment the sweet and innocent girl very well.  The one shoulder is a nice change from the other dresses.  Ironically, a one shoulder dress is also what I wore to my Homecoming last year...

Fala Chen has a simplistic fashion taste, which is seen in her choices for events such as these.  Unfortunately, simplicity did not work for her here this time as she was just too plain, and the main piece was a disaster.  The strapless white dress had potential, but instead is ill fitting and looks like she wrapped a bed sheet around her.  Predictably, she paired the dress with classic black heels, red lipstick, and simply wore her hair down.  Not Fala's brightest fashion moment, as the whole ensemble did not show her curvaceous figure or beauty.

However, it wasn't Fala that was the evening's worst dressed lady.  In general, I love Kate's everyday fashion sense and think she is a beautiful girl.  Her evening dress choices though are usually a hit or miss, and this was definitely the worst ensemble of the night.  Kate looks gorgeous in curls, but I don't know why she loves donning the slicked back hair so much, which only ages her and makes her look less attractive.  The dress does not compliment her at all, and the worst part has got to be the black yarn (?) that drapes off the back of her shoulders.  Kate looked gorgeous last year at the same event with her slightly curled hair and long sleeved v-neck printed dress.  She looked elegant and attractive without aging herself.  I hope to see her wear a gown that does her justice at the Anniversary Awards.

As always, there were hits and misses for the ladies at the event.  Hope to see even more great fashion at the Anniversary Awards!
